The imperative: du, ihr, Sie
Imperativ: du, ihr, Sie
The rule
The imperative has three forms. Du form: the verb stem without 'du', usually without ending: Komm! After -t/-d add -e: Warte! Verbs with e to i keep the change: Sprich! Nimm! Verbs with a to ä do not: Fahr! Ihr form: like the present tense without 'ihr': Kommt! Wartet! Sie form: infinitive + Sie: Kommen Sie bitte! The verb usually comes first; at most words like 'bitte', 'jetzt' or 'dann' precede it. 'Sein' is special: Sei ruhig! Seid ruhig! Seien Sie ruhig!

With e to i verbs the du imperative keeps the vowel change: sprich, nimm, gib. - Fährst langsamer! → Fahr langsamer!
The du imperative has no -st ending and no umlaut: fahr. - Gehst nach Hause! → Geh nach Hause!
The du-imperative has no -st ending: Geh! Komm! Nimm! The pronoun is normally dropped; only 'Sie' stays: Gehen Sie! - Bist ruhig! → Sei ruhig!
'sein' is irregular: sei (du), seid (ihr), seien Sie. - Nehm das Buch! → Nimm das Buch!
Verbs with e -> i/ie keep the change in the du-imperative: nimm, gib, sprich, lies. - Schläf gut! → Schlaf gut!
Verbs with a -> ä lose the umlaut in the imperative: schlaf, fahr, lauf.
The rule in German
Der Imperativ hat drei Formen. Du-Form: Verbstamm ohne „du“, meist ohne Endung: Komm! Nach -t/-d mit -e: Warte! Verben mit e zu i behalten den Wechsel: Sprich! Nimm! Verben mit a zu ä nicht: Fahr! Ihr-Form: wie das Präsens ohne „ihr“: Kommt! Wartet! Sie-Form: Infinitiv + Sie: Kommen Sie bitte! Das Verb steht meist vorn; davor stehen höchstens Wörter wie „bitte“, „jetzt“ oder „dann“. „Sein“ ist besonders: Sei ruhig! Seid ruhig! Seien Sie ruhig!
