The rule

In a statement the conjugated verb always takes position 2. In W-questions the question word takes position 1 and the verb position 2: Wann kommst du?

At the weekend we are visiting my parents.
Kommst du mit? Wann kommst du?

Watch out

The rule in German

Im Aussagesatz steht das konjugierte Verb immer auf Position 2. Position 1 kann das Subjekt sein, aber auch eine Zeit- oder Ortsangabe oder ein Objekt; dann steht das Subjekt nach dem Verb: Morgen fahre ich nach Köln. Ja/Nein-Fragen beginnen mit dem Verb: Kommst du mit? Bei W-Fragen steht das Fragewort auf Position 1 und das Verb auf Position 2: Wann kommst du?
