W-questions and yes/no questions

W-Fragen und Ja/Nein-Fragen

W-FragenJa/Nein-Fragen

The rule

A W-question starts with a question word and the verb comes second: Wo wohnst du? Was machen Sie? The main question words: wer (person), was (thing), wo (place), woher (origin), wohin (destination), wann (time), wie (manner, also: Wie heißt du? Wie alt bist du? Wie viel kostet das?), warum (reason), welche/welcher/welches (choice). A yes/no question starts with the verb itself, the subject follows: Wohnst du in Berlin? Sind Sie Frau Meier? Answers: ja, nein – and 'doch' to contradict a negative question: Kommst du nicht? – Doch!

The rule in German

Eine W-Frage beginnt mit einem Fragewort, das Verb steht an zweiter Stelle: Wo wohnst du? Was machen Sie? – Doch!
