Subordinate clauses: the verb goes to the end

Nebensätze: das Verb steht am Ende

The rule

After subordinating conjunctions such as weil, dass, wenn, ob, obwohl, als, damit, bevor, nachdem, and after question words in indirect questions, the finite verb goes to the end of the clause. With two verb parts the finite verb comes last: ..., weil ich gestern nicht kommen konnte. If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb: Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.

Examples

Ich glaube, dass er heute keine Zeit hat.
I think that he has no time today.
Weil es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.
Because it is raining, we are staying at home.
Sie fragt, ob du morgen mitkommen kannst.
She asks whether you can come along tomorrow.

Watch out

The rule in German

Nach Subjunktionen wie weil, dass, wenn, ob, obwohl, als, damit, bevor, nachdem und nach Fragewörtern in indirekten Fragen steht das finite Verb am Ende des Nebensatzes. Bei zwei Verbteilen steht das finite Verb ganz hinten: …, weil ich gestern nicht kommen konnte. Steht der Nebensatz vorn, folgt im Hauptsatz sofort das Verb: Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.
