The rule

Many strong verbs change the stem vowel in the du and er/sie/es forms: e becomes i (werfen: du wirfst, er wirft), e becomes ie (sehen: du siehst, er sieht), a becomes ä (fahren: du fährst, er fährt). All other forms keep the vowel of the infinitive: ich werfe, wir werfen, ihr werft, sie werfen. That is why it is 'er wirft', not 'er werft'.

Examples

I throw the ball, you throw the ball, he throws the ball.
Siehst du das Schild? Ja, ich sehe es.
Do you see the sign? Yes, I see it.
She is driving to Vienna tomorrow, we are driving on Friday.
Er spricht drei Sprachen und liest viel.
He speaks three languages and reads a lot.

Watch out
