Futur I: werden + infinitive

Futur I: werden + Infinitiv

The rule

Futur I is 'werden' (present tense) + infinitive at the end of the clause: Ich werde morgen arbeiten. For plans with a time expression German usually just uses the present: Morgen fahre ich nach Köln. The future tense stresses an intention, an assumption or a promise. Careful: 'würde' is Konjunktiv II (would), not the future.

Examples

Ich werde dich morgen anrufen.
I will call you tomorrow.
Nächstes Jahr fahren wir nach Spanien.
Next year we are going to Spain.
Er wird wohl noch im Büro sein.
He is probably still at the office.

Watch out

The rule in German

Das Futur I bildet man mit „werden“ (Präsens) + Infinitiv am Satzende: Ich werde morgen arbeiten. Für Pläne mit Zeitangabe reicht im Deutschen oft das Präsens: Morgen fahre ich nach Köln. Das Futur betont eine Absicht, eine Vermutung oder ein Versprechen. Achtung: „würde“ ist Konjunktiv II (would), nicht Zukunft.
