The rule

These subordinating connectors say how something happens and what follows from it; the conjugated verb goes to the end. Means: 'indem' and 'dadurch, dass' (Sie lernt Vokabeln, indem sie Karten schreibt. – How? By writing cards). Result: 'sodass' or 'so …, dass' (Es regnete stark, sodass das Fest ausfiel. Es regnete so stark, dass das Fest ausfiel). Something expected does not happen: 'ohne dass' (Er ging, ohne dass jemand es merkte) – with the same subject the shorter 'ohne … zu' + infinitive (Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden). Replacement: '(an)statt dass' – with the same subject '(an)statt … zu' (Statt zu arbeiten, surft er im Internet). Likewise 'um … zu' (purpose) and 'als dass' after 'zu + adjective' (Er ist zu müde, als dass er noch fahren könnte). 'ohne … zu' and 'statt … zu' only work when both parts share the subject.
