German grammar · B1
obwohl or trotzdem?
obwohl oder trotzdem?
The rule
Both express a contrast (although, nevertheless). 'Obwohl' is a subordinating conjunction: it opens a subordinate clause and sends the verb to the end. 'Trotzdem' is an adverb in a main clause: in position 1 the verb follows at once, or it sits inside the clause: Wir gehen trotzdem spazieren. After an 'obwohl' clause the main-clause verb follows at once.
Examples
- Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
- Although it is raining, we are going for a walk.
- Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
- It is raining. Nevertheless we are going for a walk.
- Er ist müde, trotzdem arbeitet er weiter.
- He is tired, yet he keeps working.
Watch out
- Obwohl es regnet, trotzdem gehen wir spazieren. → Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren.
After the fronted 'obwohl' clause the verb comes at once: '..., gehen wir (trotzdem) spazieren'. - Trotzdem wir gehen spazieren. → Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
After 'trotzdem' in position 1 the verb comes at once. - Es regnet, obwohl gehen wir spazieren. → Es regnet, trotzdem gehen wir spazieren.
The consequence in the main clause takes 'trotzdem' (verb right after it). 'obwohl' opens the subordinate clause with the obstacle. - Trotzdem er krank ist, geht er arbeiten. → Obwohl er krank ist, geht er arbeiten.
'trotzdem' as a subordinating conjunction is colloquial; in standard German the subordinate clause needs 'obwohl'. - Er ist krank. Trotzdem er geht arbeiten. → Er ist krank. Trotzdem geht er arbeiten.
'trotzdem' takes position 1, so the verb follows at once: Trotzdem geht er.
The rule in German
Beide drücken einen Gegensatz aus. „Obwohl“ ist eine Subjunktion: Sie leitet einen Nebensatz ein, und das Verb steht am Ende. „Trotzdem“ ist ein Adverb im Hauptsatz: Auf Position 1 folgt sofort das Verb, oder es steht mitten im Satz: Wir gehen trotzdem spazieren. Nach einem Obwohl-Satz folgt sofort das Verb des Hauptsatzes.
