Two-part connectors: nicht nur … sondern auch, entweder … oder, weder … noch, zwar … aber, je … desto
Zweiteilige Konnektoren: nicht nur … sondern auch, entweder … oder, weder … noch, zwar … aber, je … desto
The rule
Two-part connectors link two parts of a sentence or two clauses and make the relation explicit: nicht nur … sondern auch (addition with emphasis), sowohl … als auch (both), entweder … oder (one of two options), weder … noch (neither – already negative, no extra 'nicht'), zwar … aber (concession), je … desto/umso (two things grow together). Word order: 'sondern auch', 'aber' and 'oder' do not change it; 'weder', 'zwar' and 'entweder' can take position 1, with the verb following; after 'je' comes a subordinate clause with the verb at the end, after 'desto' the comparative comes immediately and then the verb: Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich.
Examples
- Sie spricht nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Türkisch und Arabisch.
- She speaks not only German but also Turkish and Arabic.
- Wir fahren entweder mit dem Zug oder mit dem Bus.
- We'll go either by train or by bus.
- Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust.
- I have neither the time nor the inclination.
- Je länger ich in Deutschland lebe, desto besser verstehe ich die Leute.
- The longer I live in Germany, the better I understand people.
Watch out
- Ich habe weder Zeit noch nicht Lust. → Ich habe weder Zeit noch Lust.
'weder … noch' is already negative; an extra 'nicht' is wrong. - Je mehr ich übe, desto ich spreche besser. → Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich.
After 'desto' the comparative comes first, then the verb, then the subject. - Das Hotel ist zwar günstig, aber es liegt zwar weit weg. → Das Hotel ist zwar günstig, aber es liegt weit weg.
'zwar' belongs to the first part only; the second part starts with 'aber'. - Er ist nicht nur klug, aber auch freundlich. → Er ist nicht nur klug, sondern auch freundlich.
'nicht nur' is continued by 'sondern auch', not 'aber auch'.
