als, wenn or wann?
als, wenn oder wann?
The rule
'Wann' is the question word for a point in time and also introduces indirect questions: Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt. 'Als' is 'when' for a single event or period in the past. 'Wenn' covers repeated events (whenever), the present and future, and conditions (if). After 'als' and 'wenn' the verb goes to the end of the clause.
Examples
- When I was ten, we moved to Berlin.
- Whenever I am tired, I have a coffee.
- Wenn er morgen kommt, feiern wir.
- If he comes tomorrow, we will celebrate.
- Wann kommst du? Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.
- When are you coming? I don't know when he is coming.
Watch out
A single period in the past takes 'als'. - Ich weiß nicht, wenn er kommt. → Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.
An indirect question about the time needs the question word 'wann'.
A single period in the past: als. 'wann' asks for the time (Wann kommst du?).
For present and future use 'wenn'; 'als' is only for one-time events in the past.
Repetition in the past (immer, jedes Mal): wenn. 'als' only for the single event. - Ich weiß nicht, wenn der Film anfängt. → Ich weiß nicht, wann der Film anfängt.
The indirect question about the time takes 'wann'; 'wenn' here would mean 'if' or 'as soon as'.
