Paronyms: scheinbar or anscheinend, effektiv or effizient?

Paronyme: scheinbar oder anscheinend, effektiv oder effizient?

scheinbar / anscheinendeffektiv / effizientformal / formellkindlich / kindisch

The rule

Paronyms are similar-sounding words with different meanings that even native speakers mix up. 'anscheinend' expresses a supposition that is probably true (to all appearances); 'scheinbar' says that something only looks that way and is in fact different: 'Er ist anscheinend krank' (probably) versus 'Sein Interesse war nur scheinbar' (feigned). Further pairs: effektiv (effective, reaching the goal) and effizient (efficient, with little effort); formal (relating to form) and formell (ceremonious, by the rules); rational (reasonable) and rationell (economical, expedient); kindlich (childlike, neutral) and kindisch (childish, pejorative); sensibel (sensitive, easily hurt) and sensitiv (technical: reacting to small changes). When in doubt, test with the opposite: 'scheinbar' tolerates an 'aber in Wirklichkeit', 'anscheinend' does not.

Examples

The train is apparently delayed – there is nothing on the board yet.
The seemingly simple question turned out to be a trap.
The measure was effective but not efficient: the goal was reached, but at an enormous cost.
Formally the application is correct; whether it was submitted in due form is another question.

Watch out
