Separable verbs
Trennbare Verben
The rule
Separable verbs have a stressed prefix (an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, zu-, ab-, vor-, weg-). In a main clause the prefix goes to the end: Ich rufe dich an. In a subordinate clause the verb stands at the end in one piece: ..., weil ich dich anrufe. The past participle is prefix + the base verb's participle: an + gerufen = angerufen, aus + probiert = ausprobiert; 'zu' goes in the middle: anzurufen. Inseparable prefixes (be-, ver-, er-, ent-, zer-, ge-, emp-) never split.
Examples
- Ich stehe jeden Tag um sieben auf.
- I get up at seven every day.
- Sie hat mich gestern angerufen.
- She called me yesterday.
- Ich weiß, dass der Zug um acht abfährt.
- I know that the train leaves at eight.
- Er verstand die Frage und beantwortete sie.
- He understood the question and answered it.
Watch out
- Ich aufstehe um sieben. → Ich stehe um sieben auf.
In a main clause the prefix separates and goes to the end. - Sie hat mich geanruft. → Sie hat mich angerufen.
The participle of separable verbs is prefix + the base verb's participle: an + gerufen. - Ich möchte heute Abend gehen aus. → Ich möchte heute Abend ausgehen.
With a modal verb the separable verb stands as one infinitive at the end: ausgehen. - Ich weiß, dass er morgen kommt an. → Ich weiß, dass er morgen ankommt.
In a subordinate clause the verb moves to the end and the prefix joins it again: ankommt. - Sie hat mich gebesucht. → Sie hat mich besucht.
be-, ver-, er-, ent-, zer- and ge- are inseparable and unstressed: the past participle has no ge-. - Wann abfährt der Zug? → Wann fährt der Zug ab?
In a main clause and in a question the prefix separates and goes to the end: fährt ... ab.
